The Tour De Vallei MTB race took place on Saturday 8th October for the second consecutive year. This race started from very humble beginnings and forms part of the very successful Patensie “plaas bazaar”. This year the format was an exact repeat of the previous year’s race with a 5km, 20km and 60km dash for cash option.
The race took place in near perfect weather conditions with little or no wind. It was clear from the outset that there was going to be a big field of riders competing for honor’s in the 60km race and the race got off to a cracking start with a number of potential winners trying to put the hammer down. The pre race favourite, Jason Meaton, was very careful not to get involved in the pace making and kept his position in the front break away group until the turnaround point.
At the turnaround Jason Meaton began to pour on the heat and split the leading group with only Steven Venter and Conrad Oberholser able to stay in touch. Jason eventually opened up a two minute gap on Steven and three minutes on Conrad when he crossed the finish line in 1st place taking a well deserved win and the prize money. Steven finished 2nd with Conrad in 3rd place.
The ladies race was also a ding dong affair with the pre race favourite Gemma Meaton having to work very hard to stamp her authority on the race. Danika Sceepers, a local rider from Patensie, and Llise Dodd from the Elands river valley road extremely well to stay in touch with Gemma, but Gemma showed her class in the last 20km and had an excellent win taking 1st place ahead of Danika, 2nd and Llise in 3rd place.
All in all, it was a very successful mountain biking event and this augers well for the future of the event which is clearly going from strength to strength. Well done to all those that participated.
