A Big field at 1st Spur Schools League race in Port Elizabeth was not what was expected with the wet and cold conditions. Despite the weather we had the biggest start groups in both Primary and High Schools sections in the past 5 years. The result of this success is that there will be staggered starts at the next event to make sure that riders have more space to jostle for positions at the start.
Inter Schools Competition
With Pearson High School getting involved in the Schools League, we are looking forward to some good racing in the schools teams competition. This was Pearson’s first race and they really looked the part with their schools cycling kit branded by Subaru.
Daniel Pienaar is clearly taking racing serious both on and off the track. They showed off their new kit branded by The Wild Rapid Spur and Dunlop.
It is great to see local business getting behind the schools league riders!
The split of entries between High Schools and Primary schools were very close to 50/50. Primary Schools riders raced on a shorter track and each received a finisher medal at the end of the race.
Some racers are really serious but the whole idea behind the Spur Schools League is to introduce riders to Cross Country style Mountain Biking. They race a number of laps on a short circuit of between 2 and 4 km. A race might be as short as 4 km for the young riders and up to a maximum of 20 km for the Junior category. The focus is on fun but there is a competitive spirit among some of the older riders. Our top Provincial Schools riders rate this as an important event as they stand the chance to qualify for the SA Schools National final that takes place in October each year.
