This event was presented by the Round Table PE West to raise funds for the local charities. Riders had the option between a 20km and 35km route with the latter being the main event on the day. The race started at Slipperfields and most of the route was on the Slipperfields Mountain Bike trail.
Conditions was a bit windy but on the trail it was much better with some shelter from the wind. The start was not hectic but once the riders got onto the gravel road with the strong westerly wind from behind the pace was very fast. Kyle Bradford used the wind to good effect and was soon off the front of the group with Marco Joubert following. They were chased by Grant Daly and Calvin Batty both Junior riders. On the way back to the finish it was hard going against the strong wind. Here Joubert’s strength showed as he took the lead with Bradford sitting behind him. At the finish Marco Joubert got 1st and Kyle Bradford 2nd. The second group in were Batty and Daly. Calvin Batty attacked in the last 1 km and got away to finish 3rd just ahead of Grant Daly.
With three Juniors in the top four positions it is clear that this new bunch of young riders are going to be serious competition in future. All three of them have been active in the Provincial XCO Series as well as Spur Schools League. It is good to see the effort being put into these two series are showing results! Another young rider who is a regular face at XCO and Spur events who really impressed was young Bradley Harrington who finished 9th overall as Sub Junior (U/14)
In the ladies category Vicki Laing finished 1st after taking the lead very early on in the race. In second place, just under 3 minutes down was Laurika Kilian. Hanna Oelofsen as Sub Junior had an excellent race to finish in 3rd place! Dusty and windy conditions made it a really testing race for the riders.
